The Tamaskan Dog

About the Breed

The Tamaskan Dog is a rare breed in development that is bred to be an active, versatile companion dog with a wolf-like appearance and intelligence.

Originating from Finland, the breed is a result of crossing various northern breeds such as the Northern Inuit, Utonagan and Siberian Husky mixes. The goal was to create a dog that not only possessed the physical characteristics of a wolf but also exhibited intelligence and sociability. Visit the Tamaskan Timeline page to learn more about the history of the breed.

Physical features of the Tamaskan include a well-balanced and athletic build, a dense double coat and distinctive facial markings that contribute to their wolfish appearance. Their expressive and almost mischievous almond-shaped eyes and erect ears add to their captivating presence.

Tamaskans are known for their friendly and outgoing nature. They are generally good with children and other pets, making them suitable for families. Despite their wolf-like appearance, they are not aggressive and are often described as gentle and affectionate. This breed tends to form strong bonds with their owners, thriving on companionship and positive interactions.

In terms of intelligence, Tamaskans are highly trainable and enjoy engaging in activities that challenge their minds. They excel in various canine sports, showcasing their versatility and biddable nature. Regular exercise is crucial for this active breed to ensure they remain happy and healthy.

While the Tamaskan Dog may have a wolf-like appearance, it's important to note that they are domesticated dogs with a friendly and adaptable temperament. Responsible ownership involves providing proper training, socialization, and exercise to meet their needs and enable them to thrive in a family environment.

Depending on the line, Tamaskan Dogs do have wolf content varying from zero to thirty-percent (0-30%). We encourage all prospective owners to research their local laws to ensure wolf content and wolf lookalikes are legal in their area prior to adding a Tamaskan Dog to their family.

The Tamaskan Dog is not recognized by any of the major kennel clubs (AKC, UKC, CanKC, FCI) and none of the Tamaskan Dog registries are pursuing such at this time since the breed still has an open studbook. The breed is recognized by these US-based conformation organizations: International All Breed Canine Association (IABCA), International Canine Events (ICE), American Rare Breed Association (ARBA), Kennel Club of the USA (KC-USA), and International Canine Kennel Club (ICKC).
